Node Lifecycle: Fresh, Tested, and Decaying GEX Levels

Not every GEX level is created equal. A node that just appeared on the heatmap carries different weight than one that's been tested five times today. Understanding where a level sits in its lifecycle helps you decide how much conviction to assign when price approaches it.

What Creates a Node

A GEX node forms when open interest accumulates at a specific strike price. Large option orders — whether institutional hedges, speculative bets, or 0DTE flow — create concentrated gamma exposure that shows up as a highlighted level on the StrikeGEX heatmap.

Nodes aren't permanent features. They build, get tested, and eventually fade as options expire or get closed out. Recognizing this cycle gives you a significant edge.

The Three Stages

1. Fresh Nodes

A fresh node has just formed or significantly strengthened since the last update. Open interest at this strike is growing — someone is putting real money down. Fresh nodes produce the strongest reactions when price arrives because the full hedging obligation is still intact.

How to spot them: On StrikeGEX, watch for levels that appear between refreshes or jump in intensity. A level that wasn't prominent 15 minutes ago but now shows strong gamma is a fresh node with untested hedging pressure behind it.

2. Tested Nodes

A tested node has already had price touch or pass through it at least once. Each time price arrives at a node, some of the hedging activity gets triggered. The options that created the node may be partially closed, rolled, or adjusted. The node still has structural importance, but its mechanical force is diminished.

3. Decaying Nodes

A decaying node is losing its structural relevance. The open interest that created it is expiring, being closed out, or the underlying has moved far enough away that the gamma at this strike is negligible. On 0DTE, nodes decay rapidly in the final hours as time value collapses.

How This Changes Your Trading

Priority: Trade Fresh Nodes

When the heatmap shows a new level forming — especially during the morning session when 0DTE flow is building — treat it as your highest-conviction opportunity. The first test of a fresh node is statistically the most likely to produce a clean reaction.

Caution: Fading Tested Levels

A king node that's been tested three times today is not the same king node it was at the open. If you're relying on it for a bounce or rejection, recognize that each prior test has weakened the level. Consider reducing size or tightening stops.

Ignore: Decaying Leftovers

In the afternoon, the heatmap may still show levels from early-session positioning that have since been closed out or expired. Don't anchor to these ghost levels. Focus on what's active now — the concentrated gamma around current price.

Lifecycle and the King Node

The king node is not exempt from lifecycle dynamics. A king node established at 9:30 AM may weaken by noon as 0DTE options decay. When you see the king node shift to a new strike during the session, that's the lifecycle in action — old gamma dying, new gamma concentrating. Follow the fresh king, not the historical one.

Bottom line: The heatmap shows you where the levels are. The lifecycle tells you how much to trust them. Fresh nodes deserve full conviction. Tested nodes deserve caution. Decaying nodes deserve a glance, not a trade.
