Air Pockets: Why Price Accelerates Between GEX Levels

If you've watched SPX blow through $10 in two minutes for no apparent reason, you've seen an air pocket in action. These gaps between GEX levels are low-resistance pathways where there's minimal dealer hedging to slow price down — and understanding them is just as important as understanding the nodes themselves.

What Is an Air Pocket?

An air pocket is a stretch of strikes between two significant GEX nodes where gamma exposure is minimal. On the StrikeGEX heatmap, these appear as the dimmer zones between the bright, high-gamma levels. There's no concentrated dealer positioning to absorb momentum, so price travels through quickly.

Think of it like a highway: GEX nodes are traffic lights — price slows down, stops, or reverses at these points. Air pockets are the open road between lights — price accelerates freely until it hits the next intersection.

Why Air Pockets Form

Options open interest doesn't distribute evenly across strikes. It clusters at round numbers, high-volume strikes, and key psychological levels. The gaps between these clusters create air pockets. Several factors make them wider or narrower:

Entry: At the Node, Not in the Pocket

Don't chase price through an air pocket. By the time you react, the move is halfway done. Instead, position at the nodes — enter when price tests a level, with a target at the next significant node across the air pocket.

Targets: The Next Node

When price breaks through a GEX level and enters an air pocket, the most likely destination is the next concentrated gamma level. Use StrikeGEX to measure the distance between nodes. If there's a 15-point air pocket between the put wall and the next support, that's your profit target.

Stops: Tight at the Break

If a GEX level breaks and price enters an air pocket, it should not come back through the broken level easily. If it does, the break was false. Keep stops tight just on the other side of the broken node.

Air Pockets and Negative Gamma

Air pockets are especially dangerous in negative gamma (purple) zones. In positive gamma, even air pockets are somewhat dampened because the broader dealer positioning is stabilizing. But in negative gamma, dealers are amplifying the move — and an air pocket in a negative gamma zone is a recipe for a sharp, fast directional run.

When the StrikeGEX heatmap shows purple zones with wide gaps between levels, respect the velocity. These are not environments to fight the trend.

Common Air Pocket Setups

  1. Wall break + air: Price breaks through the gamma wall, enters an air pocket, and runs to the next resistance. This is a trend-continuation setup.
  2. Put wall break + air: Price breaks below the put wall into a void. This often triggers stop-loss cascades and negative gamma acceleration. Fast, violent moves.
  3. King node rejection + air: Price gets rejected from the king node and enters an air pocket in the other direction. The combination of rejection plus low resistance creates a clean swing trade.
Key principle: Where GEX nodes tell you where price reacts, air pockets tell you where price travels. Both are essential for planning entries, targets, and risk.
